WORST UPDATE EVER!!The home screen used to be only the apps the kids downloaded. Simple. Now its a mess of apps, videos, books, etc. My daughter can't read so she just hits a app she likes and has to wait for it to download bc she can't tell which is downloaded and which is not. Plus we have had problems using the apps without internet. Use to be you could play the plays you downloaded without internet, now I find she needs my hotspot to play. Would not recommend after the update.
The tablet itself is a solid tablet. But, lets get real, you're buying this tablet for Amazon Freetime.First, many of the Freetime options require a large portion of their data to be downloaded to the tablet, NOT the SD card. This means you still need a fair amount of internal memory. So if you want to not have to waste time juggling the few things you can have at once, get the most internal memory. Wish I would have known that when picking options.Second, Amazon Freetime is a literal nightmare to use. Like, I legit have nightmares about it. Yes, there are thousands of quality books, games, and videos to choose from. Yes, Amazon has the majority of them tagged by age range so you can set it to what will work for your kiddo. But that still leaves your child a mind-boggling amout of items. No big deal, you can just go in and only select the ones you want available, right? No, apparently not. Because Amazon secretly relishes in making Christmas a sad affair. Or something like that. Instead, you have to go in and deselect each and every option you don't want for your child. Which means you now have to click THOUSANDS of items-EACH ONE INDIVIDUALLY. To set it up for my 4yo, I spent a whole day combing through the suggested options to reduce it to a manageable, age-appropriate, interest-specific library. A WHOLE FRIGGIN DAY! And the options are changing all the time so when they add new things, you have to go in and do it all again. AGGGGHHHHH.If Amazon changed this, I would happily buy one of these tablets again. As it is, "Freetime" is practically a swear word in my house. If you dont mind using all of your own free time to manage this friggin thing, then by all means. There ARE some great options. But if you value your sanity, just get the Fire 8, a kid-proof case, and buy what you want individually.
These tablets have been lifesavers for us for well over a year now. Then I had to reset one to factory and the new Amazon Freetime UI is totally unusable by non-readers. If your kids read cool but let's be honest, this tablet is designed for kids who aren't in school yet. The software update is not reversible.
I have had these for my kids for the past two years and it is completely ridiculous. They love their Kindles. I want to love it. But they are plagued with "Not Enough Storage" errors. Kids download a LOT of stuff and we have to remove but even though I've removed, there always seems to never be enough space.I spoken with tech support and what they suggested was to factory reset. Well guess what, it clears the kid's games, shows, books, everything. Then you can't get any of the saved game data back after the factory reset. I have two of these and they both act the same way. Then it's a matter of time before it fills up again and not from the kid's downloads. They fill up from some sort of ghost files that you can NEVER get rid of. AND I'M IN TECH SUPPORT for my work for years and these things frustrate me.My final advice, run away from this product!!! Go get a cheap tablet from Walmart or online garage sales. If Amazon would fix this issue on my Amazon Fire Kids Kindle, it would be the best but noooo. They advise to factory reset.I forgot to mention that I even added an SD card to expand the storage but that was a waste as the Kindle doesn't utilize it and I still get Not Enough Storage. Really sad about this as it should be such a great product. I'll stay away from all of Amazon's Kindles.
When I bought this tablet, about three months ago, it was really nice, fast, perfectly adequate for my daughter, she was very happy. Now, it forced its way to a system update, and it's super extremely slow, almost unusable. Now she has to wait several seconds or minutes before games start, and even games that uses to play nice and smooth (so I'm sure the tablet hardware is capable of running them) are slow, show random pauses, sluggish ... thanks Amazon and your forced updates. I guess you get what you pay for, stay clear (unless you manage to root it, then you can remove the crapware that amazon forces you to install).
A year ago, I was able to search Free Time Unlimited for books that had a narration feature and would be read aloud to my grandchildren. I purchased two more units because I liked that feature. However, that feature has disappeared. It is no longer possible to identify, "Read to Me" children's books from the available books. In fact, I can't even find them by searching the Amazon site, even though I'd be willing to pay for them, and send them to my grandchildren's kindles. The "Read to Me" functionality was the sole purpose of these purchases, so I'm very disappointed. When I phone tech support, twice, the techs had no idea what I was talking about.
i was always hesitant but end up buying because it was great deal. However, first one showed up battery problem in ~2 months. Got a replacement because of 2 yrs worry free guarantee (i appreciate how they handled it). However, the new one that I've received in less than 1 month ago, stopped working; not booting, not charging; tried multiple adapters, cables, ports.update: it's now charging (using same adapter, cable). though it's working, i'm not changing my 'unreliable' label for it as it's stopped and started working for no apparent reasons.
I bought serval of the kids tablets and they didn’t last. They won’t charge now and there not even a year old. We tried new chargers and they won’t charge. About everyone that I bought last year for Christmas are junk
Some Kindle books are corrupted and will completely erase all the books stored on your SD memory cards. I was consistently getting an error message on my Kindle Fire that the SD card was “unexpectedly removed” when it was still in the slot with the cover securely over it. I contacted customer service when I noticed that all my books that were saved on my SD card were all deleted off my SD card. This is the SD card I bought from Amazon for the Kindle Fire. They checked my logs and looked at something else on their end and then said the files were corrupted! I ONLY used my Kindle Fire for books purchased through Amazon. I do NOT use it for anything else and do not purchase digital books from any other source so that means a Kindle book or books that I purchased from Amazon were corrupted and corrupted my Kindle Fire. The customer service representative then said the only way to correct it would be to plug in my Kindle Fire or the SD card onto my desktop computer. To do what?!? So it can corrupt my desktop computer as well!?! Are you kidding me!?! I have purchased over a thousand digital books from Amazon and this is the customer service they provide? I WAS a big fan of Amazon and loved their Kindles (I have several of them) and Kindle books...now I am just extremely disappointed with their products and their customer service.
After only 7 months, it stopped downloading videos and stopped deleting videos. Amazon clearly says "No questions asked, we'll replace it",,, but this is not true. I had to spend over 1.5 hours with their Tech support to try to fix the problem. They had me reset it to factory setting. Then they still wouldn't send me a new one. The best thing they can do? Send me a refurbished one after they receive mine and test it for a week... REFURBISHED is the best you can expect from them... someone else's garbage.I had a horrible experience with them.
So we’ve had this a few months and I’m pretty happy with it except for the blue shade filter not being available on child profile!!! Seriously. Only on main adult profile is the option available. I was able to download an app and “share” with my sons profile that kind of works but what the heck?!? How is that not an option for other profiles?
